Common Questions Asked About Curling
A: Curling begins in November and ends in early April. New curlers can curl for half a season or the whole season. Q: Is curling done outdoors the way it began in Scotland? A: No. Norfolk has an indoor "Ice Shed" with man made ice that is groomed to provide a consistent and superior playing surface. Air temperatures in the ice shed are usually maintained in the 40 degree range. For the comfort of the players and guests, the club offers a large, warm viewing area and a respectable bar and lounge to discuss the finer points of the game. Q: Can I be on a team if I don’t have a partner? A: Yes—singles can sign up for any league and they will be placed on a team that needs additional members. Q: I’m just a beginner—won’t I hold up the game? A: No way! Curling has all levels of players with a wide range of abilities. Your skip and teammates can offer tips to help you keep the game moving along. The club provides instruction for new curlers as well as curling clinics for new and experienced curlers to learn together. Curling is an easy sport to pick up—beginners, novices and experienced curlers can all thoroughly enjoy a game together. As any curler will tell you, even the most seasoned veteran misses shots. Q: What equipment do I need in order to curl? A: Curling is a relatively inexpensive sport. All you really need to curl is warm, comfortable clothing, gloves, and flat, rubber-soled shoes (sneakers or running shoes often work well). The club has brooms and some sliders available to curlers who are new to the game. Most new curlers purchase a slider that slips on over your own shoes for about $12.00. Once you have determined that this is the winter sport for you, an investment of under $150.00 can buy you specially designed curling shoes, a broom and gloves. Q: How much does it cost to be a member of the Norfolk Curling Club? A: Curling in Norfolk is relatively inexpensive. We have several levels of membership. Click Here for a Membership Application form which has a dues list. Q: How can I become a member of the Norfolk Curling Club? A: If you would like to become a member of the Norfolk Curling Club fill out the Membership Application Form (Click Here ) and mail it in. If you have other questions about membership click here and we will get in touch. Q: How can I get involved in the club? A: A great way to get involved is to volunteer at social curling events. Are you handy in the kitchen? Would you like to tend bar at a bonspiel? We’re always looking for people who are handy to help fix "things" around the club. These are a few of the many ways you can get involved, get to know your fellow curlers at the club and meet other curlers from around the region. Look for sign-up sheets on the bulletin boards and announcements asking for help in the newsletter. |
