Running
Surface
-
That ring that
you see when you flip your rock over is the running
surface. This is the surface that your rock makes contact
with the pebble. It's width is usually anywhere from 3 to 7
millimeters wide. Your outside edge does the curling part
and once this has worn away its time for a new set of
rocks. Pits outside the running surface are no problem but
pits on the running surface can be a problem. They usually
tend to pick up debris more easily or cut into the pebble.
You will see snow in the pit if this problem occurs. Pay
attention to your
rock if you notice a pit on the running
surface. When you flip over your rocks and always notice
snow (sometimes mistaken for frost on ice) this may be an
indication that your outer edge has worn out and the rocks
are running on their inner edge.
Striking
Band
- Located on the
outside of the rock as a white or dull ring around the
rock. Why you never grab rocks from another sheet is
because the striking bands may not match up! This may cause
the rocks to strike another rock outside of the striking
band and chip or crack the rock. Rocks come in a variety of
weights and sizes and are matched as sets. So one sheet may
look the same (its granite) but their sizes may be
different.
Handles
-
If your handle
is loose then please report it to the ice maker or proper
authority to tighten it. Never do it yourself. They
have the proper tools to tighten the handle to the rock.
You may be adding to a problem instead of fixing one!
Life
of a Rock
- They will last
you
20 years and up. The ice maker cleans the ice daily or
according to use. Dirt and grime can prematurely wear down
your rocks running surface.
CLEAN
YOUR SHOES BEFORE YOU STEP OUT ON THE ICE.
